Part 1:   The Birth of Civil War

80,000-100,000 Deaths -  The deaths include 27,639 Tamil fighters, more than 21,066 Sri Lankan soldiers, 1000 SriLankan police, 1500 Indian soldiers, and tens of thousands of civilians. May it be Singhalese or Tamil, they are Humans!

The above is a result of the civil war in Sri Lanka, fought for the past 25 years. Finally it has come to an end with a real SAD note!. For those who are unaware about the civil war and its origin, and for those who had so far heard the different ethnic versions (supporting one of the groups). I would like to brief it in a nutshell rather than detailing the whole story, with a neutral view.(supporting Humanity).

Sri Lanka is a country bearing three ethnic groups that are found in majority, The Sinhalese( Who speak Sinhala), The Sri Lankan Tamil (Who speak Tamil but belong to Srilanka), and the Indian Tamil (Who came from India for various reasons and speak Tamil). The Sinhalese are the majority constituting 74% of the Sri Lankan population while 12.6 percent are Sri Lankan Tamils and 5.5 percent are Indian Tamils.

Sri Lanka was under the British rule till 1948. After the political independence granted by the British after peaceful negotiations, disagreements between the Sinhalese and Tamil ethnic communities flared up when drawing up the country's first post-independence constitution. It was the seed for the Civil war.

The problem was that, the Tamils who where the minority, occupied most of the government jobs. Percentage of educated Tamils where more, specifically with the knowledge in English, as during the British rule most of the Sinhalese where from rural areas and had no access to the urban areas like the Tamils had. Tamils outnumbered the majority Sinhalese drastically in all areas, education, economy, employment and more. This created a worry among the Sinhalese, and the government was under an immense pressure to handle this issue. Instead of designing a long term plan, the then government had messed up due to the pressure. The Government announced Sihala as the national language. Their true intention was to increase the percentage of Sinhalese in government job and in universities, having in mind that, by the time the Tamils learn Sinhala, the opportunities for both the group would be made even. Their intention was indeed rite but the solution they implemented could have been better. This created hatred among the ethnic groups. The Tamils believed that that decision was to suppress their ethnic group and get them out of Sri Lanka. This was further fueled by the then politicians who where always in a desire to get a separate country for Tamils, which would make them enjoy free powers. The people where unaware about all these and so a strong conflict between the ethnic groups began. The Tamils started fighting for a separate nation. This in-turn gave birth to revolutionary groups who started to fight for the Tamils. One of the major rebel group formed was the LTTE.

Then came another decision by the government, to fix high marks for the Tamils, compared to the Sinhalese to qualify for the universities to further their education. This again was with the intention to increase the percentage of the Sinhalese in universities who where drastically overtaken by the minority Tamils and moreover many Sinhalese who where in the rural areas had a better chance of getting seats in university. What else is required more than this! The Tamils rose to the peak of their emotions, well kindled and inflamed by the greedy politicians. The Rebel groups grew stronger and the revolution took more pace and intensity, seeking a separate nation for Tamils. The Civil War took its violent form.

Instead of peaceful negotiations, both the government and the Rebel groups opted for Non-violence. The civil war began with exchange of bullets and gifting of corpses. When questioned who began that, Each would blame the other! Like the question of, which came into existence first egg or the Hen?. It would never have an answer. May it be any one, who had begun that, one belonged to a nation that follows Buddha and the other follows Gandhiji. Had either one of them had really followed it, such thing would never have begun or would have been stopped in no time. But both failed.

Neither of them can be supported for their act, may it be the Government or the rebel groups that fought on behalf of the Tamils. Those who were killed where humans, may them be of any ethnic race!. The government should have opted for different plans or the Tamils should have understood the real scenario, rather than acting with ethnic emotions kindled by the greedy and insensible politicians.

The civil war that had began then, prevailed for almost 25 years resulting in a heavy loss of human life. Both, the Government and the rebel groups were reported to have violated human rights during the civil war all these years.

To make it simple, lets assume there are 80 pigeons and 20 sparrows but the number of grains available is just 20. What would happen if 10 grains are occupied by 10 sparrows and the rest 10 is to be shared by 80 pigeons. Hope you get the logic! What else is required to create a cloud of commotion and conflict! Being birds it can end up in any way. But Being a human, with six senses, there should have been a mutual understanding and equal sharing, which would have ended in harmony. But Nah!! The tale was so bad, with its pages filled with blood and scriptures of human right violations allover.

Me who belongs to the Tamil ethnic group might now be called as "Traitor" for not supporting my own ethnic group. May it be, as the ones who name me so, are my brothers too!. The one race I belong to, is Humanity, and would thrive for its peace and harmony at any cause. The SriLankans who were killed in Anuradhapura Massacre were my brothers and the Tamil's who where assaulted in Kumudini Boat Massacre in return, where my sisters. They where all the same. They all had the same pain while killed. The soil that bears their blood still smells the same. [ Continues]

First of all hats off for having an alternate point of view and putting it out in open. But, don't you think discriminating a group just because they are doing good in their field is too much? Also Sinhalese being the majority population would have eventually got more political positions in a democracy w/o having to be given any preferential treatment.

Hi Rakesh thank you for your support and i wish it continues forever.

yes indeed as you said the srilankan government did a blunder. It is obvious. But a blunder for Blunder makes a bundle of blunders!! that's what i mean to say. The intentions of both the groups where right, but the actions where way beyond appreciation. It was just a matter of sharing..and we are so called social animals..the word "social" became ungraceful because of the way the two groups had acted. It is time to put an end to this chaos! By all means the ones who violated human rights should be and will be punished...but there is a nation and its people beyond that seeking peace! I would share my opinion on how tamils and lankans can work together for a bright future in my next blog.

Its a painful truth that, just before jaffna massacre, few LTTE captured lankan military people and burnt them alive by putting rubber tyres in their head.. Srilankan govt buried thier bodies in a remote area and suppressed the news as this will trigger a massive wave of hatred among tamil.. but new leaked out and Srilankans went even mad.. rampaging all tamils in their view.. even all the patients in the hospital were shot down mercilessly until no movements were seen...

I might be wrong with the fact.. someone can correct me if so..

u r perfect henry...u have come out of the the shell that you are tamil..you are indian..YOU have started feeling that you are a human...and you feel for humans for whatever their race may be...PAIN is same for all. Let us encourage the tamils and srilankans to forget the bitter past and live in harmony meanwhile justice will be served for who violated human rights. Let peace and harmony come to humanity just through peace...nothing more than that!!

The truth is.. I cant say I am Indian too peter... that wud be even worser... I wud say, India has played a major part in washing out civil war(just by killing everyone in a side)... Indeed, I can say myself as you said.. one amoung the traitors..who watched a genocide!!

First Of all congrats on starting a blog...!!!

But when i read thru this article i felt that you are not aware of the true history!!! (And i'm not surprised of it as you never give a damn to history anyway) and owing to which i've to contradict your verdict... But since we have discussed a lot i don't think our conversations would change either your ideas or mine!!!... but i would like it if you could go thru the real history once... Read abt Selva and all... The Armed struggle started only in the 1980's... that is after 40 years of non violence!!! And please stop blabbering abt being cuddled in ethnic shells... YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE FACT... We are not Against anyone...But then again we will not sit silent when being Hit...!!! Summa saying When a Tamil talks against tamils means he has come out of shell is nothing but ridiculous!!!...

Simple Request:

Please don't talk abt Tigers or EELAM without understanding them... It Degrades them!!! I know Tigers made few mistakes... but Show me a man who has not done mistakes!!!

@Rakesh,

"But, don't you think discriminating a group just because they are doing good in their field is too much?" - Are you referring to the Reservation system which we have in our country... Are you speaking for Brahmins??

27 July 2011 at 23:36

@Prasanna,

Relating to the LTTE Murdering SRILANKA Military officers are you sure that happened b4 Jaffna massacre??? Can you tell me where did you read it???

27 July 2011 at 23:37

Well naga...Do u knw how long india struggled for freedom!!! it never worked the way of non-violence--It was just after Gandhism we felt the true essence of freedom...

You display yourself as a follower of Mahathma..and you want people to follow it too...But when ur ethnic emotions comes to priority ..Gandhism doesnt work...What a COntraDICTIOn !!

Displaying or talking about Mahathma is too easy than trying to implicate it..

The fact is that Mahathma will always be mahathma even against HITLER!!!!!

27 July 2011 at 23:52

If the japnese who where affected by the bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had decided to show their vengeance by forming a rebel group..or a terrorist organisation things would have been different...rather they adopted their culture in their roots,"non-violence". They worked together for their future instead retaliating to their nationalistic feeling! The had a heart to put aside the " eye for eye" foolishness. What a better example can u get than this!

THIS IS WAT I MEAN COMMING OUT OF SHELL: It isn't just posting opinions against own "Race" or"religion"or Whatever "THIS"

28 July 2011 at 00:03

Gandhi... Yes a great example...!!! But Gandhi was not murdered by the British... and neither was the INDO-BRITISH Problem a similar Problem to TAMIL-SINGALESE Problem!!! INDO-BRITISH was totally an Economic Colonization thing... Whereas the EELAM is totally different!!!

And Where Did my ethinic come in to play anywhere... wherever there is suppression i give my voice against that...!!! It is not just because they are tamil i'm supporting them...!!!

Why was Gandhi murdered peter???... Is there any ethinic reason behind that?... Why are many small countries fighting for their freedom kadhar??...

This EELAM issue is not a Civil war... It is a war for independence... For freedom!! First understand that!!!

Yes Peace and non-violence are the greatest tools... But they are the toughest to take... And FYI Gandhi asked indians to support British in the war...!!!

28 July 2011 at 00:53

And regarding the japanese thing... It was a war between two economic super powers for Capturing markets and Monopoly...!!! So There will not be anything like military revenge or something... They are business people... They will come under the capitalism warfare methods... White collar Criminals...!!!

And they are still taking revenges... not in the battle fields but in the economic ventures!!!... Killing loads of common people all over the world!!!

Please don't relate them to EELAM... And how do you call an organization as terrorist organization...???

28 July 2011 at 00:57

I think there isnt gona be any use in giving you examples or making u understand...as simply because u have already decided to deny it before being told!

U call the japenese the White collar criminals, then im sure u wud call the americans with some name...the british with some name..

Im sorry naga,..i aint ready for that..for no one would listen to and im not interested in it aswell. All humans are my brothers , my mates..whatsoever..!

Im not here to blame any one...create commotions,..my goal is simple...see into an issue...investigate on it..give a neutral opinion..and try finding a solution for my beloved humans.

28 July 2011 at 02:33

I wish u had read my previous post about Mr.Andre. It wud give u a clear picture about my intention. After reading it if u say that i support Mr.Andre and his actions, then i wud say u have to dig a little deeper!

We are on a different track naga.. I want a united and peaceful srilanka..you want the tamils to get their own nation..but any means..though there is another episode of bloodshed Civil War!!!!!!!!

LETS STOP trying to change each other! I wud never blame u..Its ur opinion and feeling..i wish i dont hurt it..! Go on ur path till your heart somewhere says it isnt right!

Lets stop it here.

28 July 2011 at 02:43

Listen...!!!

The world has problems...!!! And i agree that a solution must be made... And the common solution for all the problems is kindness...!!! I Also agree that!!!

but implementation of that solution is the difficult one... If u don't see ethinicity why did you want tht britishers out of india in the first place... why did the allied powers fight against hitler... What was the reason for che,Lenin and so on...

I don't create commotions... i work for giving solutions... not random ones... but specific ones...!!!

28 July 2011 at 02:47

Im ready to use the Tool "Kindness - non-violence" which seems a difficult one for u.. as u said!
If there is any tool which is easier for u to handle..i wish u go ahead!

When you are ready to join hands and feel my tool is easier..we can share the tool.

I would never stop my neutral view whatsoever. Neither the Srilankan government is a Buddha nor the Rebel groups are Gandhis. As well neither of them are my enemies. They are humans...My beloved siblings! I will write ...write...impose non-violence.. till peace is attained!
